ABOUT US
The Birabi Memorial Grammar School (BMGS) Alumni Association was formed out of the necessity for a viable organization that is dedicated to the promotion of educational excellence of BMGS. It started with the visit of the late Engr. Joseph Abueh to the United States (USA) and Canada in early 2019 during which he contacted a few of his fellow BMGS graduating Class of 1973 Alumni residing in the USA, Canada, and United Kingdom (UK) with the desire to form an alumni association. After Engr. Abueh returned to Nigeria, the country of his residence at the time, he called Prof. Emmanuel Eneyo in the United States, who in turn coordinated with others he knew in the Diaspora and called for a face-to-face meeting to discuss the proposal.
On August 10, 2019, a few BMGS alumni residing in the USA met in Houston, Texas to discuss the formation and inauguration of the BMGS Alumni Association. The inaugural meeting’s attendance included teleconference dial-in from the United Kingdom and Nigeria. Many activities and consultations followed the Houston Texas USA meeting which resulted in the (i) writing, review, and adoption of a governance document – the constitution, (ii) licensing of the Association in the State of Texas, USA on January 25, 2021, and (iii) approval by the US Department of Treasury’s Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as an IRS Section 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. The official name of the organization as licensed in the State of Texas, and approved by the IRS is the “Birabi Memorial Grammar School Alumni Association, Inc.”
The BMGS Alumni Association, Inc., although based in Texas, USA, is open for membership to all BMGS alumni, regardless of year of graduation and place of residence in the world. The only requirements are the completion of a membership application form, maintaining membership status by paying the required dues and fees and adhering to the constitution and bylaws of the association.
